Carpeting – More Than Meets The Eye
Choosing The Proper Carpet Padding Is Essential For The Life Of Your New Carpet. Numerous choices and different options exist for padding beneath your new carpet and choosing the correct carpet padding can be difficult. This guide will help you make the best decision for your own home needs. And remember our flooring experts are always here to help. Just give us a call.
Cushion or padding is a critical flooring component for every home carpet installation. It is the foundation for your carpet and is critical for enhancing both comfort and durability.
Padding is constructed of several different materials, including urethane foam, sponge rubber, foam rubber, bonded urethane and felted combinations of hair and jute. You can learn more about types of carpet pads from Brandi Carpet. your interior and exterior carpet and flooring experts.
All top carpeting manufacturers’ warranties require that you choose padding with appropriate thickness and density to handle the traffic on the carpet. In a bedroom, a thick, soft cushion works well, but in living rooms or hallways with a good deal more foot traffic, a thin cushion often is better choice.
The Correct choice of padding for your interior carpet will:
- Make your home carpet feel more comfortable and stay newer longer by absorbing the constant pressure of foot traffic
Keep your room quieter and help insulate your home through sound-absorption and thermal insulation
Help keep the carpeting from matting down and becoming worn looking
Help to keep your carpet cleaner by providing air space allowing the carpet to “breathe” more naturally
The wrong padding can:
- Cause buckling and wrinkling or bunching up
May cause carpeting to begin to pull apart at the seems
Break the carpet down, especially in high traffic areas
Lead to you invalidating the warranty of your carpet
Types of Carpet Pads Available
Carpet padding, or “cushioning,” is available in three basic types: foam, fiber, and rubber.
Each type of carpet pad has different varieties and constructions. The type and thickness of cushion your carpet requires varies according to traffic levels and carpet patterns and styles. For example, bedrooms and other areas with light or moderate traffic, often use thicker and softer carpet cushion. Living rooms, family rooms, hallways, stairs and other heavy traffic areas require thinner and firmer cushion due to wear concerns.

Foam Carpet Cushion Foam carpet cushion comes in three clearly different varieties:
Prime polyurethane foam is a firmer version of the same cushioning used in upholstered furniture, mattresses, and automobile seats. Two liquid ingredients are combined to form a large mass of foam, which is then sliced into sheets for use as a carpet cushion.
Bonded polyurethane foam (also called rebond) is quite unique. You will know it when you see it, because it is formed by combining shredded pieces of foam, in different sizes and different colors, into one solid piece of padding material. It usually has a surface net for ease of installation and improved performance.
Bonded foam is an amazing recycling project. Nearly all the scrap foam in the United States, and some from other countries as well, is utilized to make bonded cushion. This recycles material which would otherwise be thrown out and it eases the strain on our landfills. Moreover, bonded foam is itself highly recyclable.
Froth polyurethane foam is manufactured with carpet backing machinery. Liquid ingredients are applied, either directly to the backs of some carpeting styles, or to a non-woven material. They form a thin, dense foam which is particularly useful in commercial applications with wide expanses of carpet and high traffic areas.
Rubber Cushion For Your Home Carpet
There are two types basically of sponge rubber carpeting cushions:
Waffled rubber carpeting cushion is cushion made by molding natural or synthetic rubber. Heat cures the rubber and forms a waffle pattern. This type produces a soft, resilient cushion whose luxurious feel is particularly useful and comfortable for home interiors.
Flat sponge rubber is a firm, dense carpet cushion which has a flat surface and is normally used in large-scale commercial applications and with loop type (or Berber) carpet. (See below for more on Berber)
Rubber carpet cushion manufacturing processes are varied to produce different levels of density and desired firmness. The usual measurement is the weight in ounces per square yard. Call us for further explanation.
Fiber Carpet Cushioning
Foam and rubber carpet cushions are produced from new and or recycled materials. Fiber carpet cushion, on the other hand, uses existing fibers (both virgin and or recycled, and either all natural or man-made fibers) which are then interlocked into a sheet of felt.
There are two different varieties of fiber carpet cushioning:
Natural fibers include felt, animal hair, and jute (the material used to make some kinds of rope and burlap bags). This is one of the oldest types of carpet cushion, dating back to the earliest days of machine-made carpet and not widely used.
Synthetic fibers include acrylics, nylon, polyester, and polypropylene, which are needle-punched into relatively dense cushions these have a firm feel and, as with other types of carpet cushion, can be made in virtually any weight, to stand up under light, medium, or heavy traffic, this is how they are usually classified.
Choosing a Pad for Berber Carpet Berber carpet is increasingly popular, and usually requires a thin, firmer carpet cushion. When choosing this type of carpeting, be sure that the accompanying cushion has been specified by the manufacturer as suitable for Berber carpet.
