Carpet Padding

When selecting the proper carpet padding for your new carpet installation always be sure to check the carpet manufacturer’s requirements for thickness and density. The general rule of thumb for most residential carpet flooring installations is to choose a cushion no more than 1/2 of an inch thick and no less than 1/4 of an inch with at least a 5.5 pounds per cubic feet density. If the installation is a berber carpet or another low profile carpet, then you will want to choose a carpet pad that is no more than 3/8 of an inch thick with 7-8 pounds density.
The type and thickness of carpet padding you need will vary depending on traffic levels and carpet patterns and styles. Bedrooms, lounge areas, dens, and other rooms with light to moderate foot traffic can often use a thicker and softer cushion, providing a feel of additional comfort. Heavy traffic areas such as living rooms, family rooms, hallways, stairs may require a thinner, much firmer pad.
The wrong carpet padding can negatively affect your carpet flooring in a variety of ways including: wrinkling and buckling, separation of the carpet at the seams and even a breakdown of the carpet materials structure. The wrong carpet padding may even void the carpet manufacturer’s warranties so always check with the dealer.

A Quick Thought Guide Concerning Carpet Padding
Residential cut pile, cut- loop, or high-level loop carpet flooring requires a more resilient, firmer pad with a thickness of 7/16 inch of an inch and no less than 1/4 of an inch with 6 pounds per cubic feet density. Types of carpet pads that may be used are various polyurethane foams, including the most common bonded foam product often referred to as “rebond,” fiber, or at times rubber.
Berber carpets, or thinner looped low profile carpets, or cut pile carpet that is made with large, wide loops, will require a stable, low-flexing, cushion foundation. A thicker, softer cushion is not acceptable with these carpets. Cushion thickness should not exceed 3/8 of an inch for these type flooring products.

Hardwood Flooring
There are two specific types of hardwood flooring available, SOLID hardwood and ENGINEERED wood flooring:
Solid wood flooring is precisely that a solid piece of wood cut and designed for flooring applications. The thickness of solid wood flooring generally ranges from ¾” to 5/16”. Hardwood flooring can be installed above or on grade.

Engineered wood floors are true natural woods that are manufactured using multiple layers of different wood veneers. The grain of each layer runs in different directions, making this a very stable flooring product. This type of wood flooring will expand and contract less than solid wood flooring due to changes in humidity and temperature. The top layer of engineered wood flooring consists of high-quality wood. Engineered wood flooring can be installed above, on or below grade.

There are several types of tiles used for residential and commercial applications:
Ceramic tile is the most common tile used in the US in offices, stores and homes. Ceramic tile comes in two forms: glazed and unglazed.

Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile. The difference between porcelain and ceramic is that porcelain is fired at a higher temperature, making it more dense and moisture-resistant. Porcelain tiles are also less porous, making them more stain-resistant. For these reasons, most porcelain tiles are suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations. Because of their hardness porcelain tiles are harder to cut so the cost and labor involved is often higher. Porcelain tiles are available in matte, un-glazed or a highly polished finish.

Natural Stone Tile

There are several types of natural stone tiles which are used quite often for flooring. These are: Marble, Granite, Travertine, Slate, and Sandstone. Each type of stone tile has it’s own unique set of properties allowing for a variety of flooring applications both indoor and outdoor.

Laminate Flooring
Since the lamination process is the fusing together of two or more different materials then sealing them, laminate flooring comes with a wide selection of choices. Wood, stone and tile are the most popular uses for laminate floors. Nearly every type of grain texture and color of wood or of natural looking stone or tile has been captured, laminated and manufactured into flooring from which you can create your floors specifically designed for your residential or commercial flooring needs.
Smooth, Embossed and/or Textured, Embossed in Registration, or Distressed/Hand scraped. With the large choice of laminate available you’re certain to discover something just right for your flooring needs.
